Could Slow-Rising hCG Indicate an Ectopic Pregnancy?
One important medical consideration when hCG rises slowly or plateaus is the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy.
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the embryo implants outside the uterus — most commonly in the fallopian tube. In rare cases, especially after previous C-sections, implantation can occur in scar tissue.
In early ectopic pregnancies, hCG levels may:
- Rise more slowly than expected
- Fail to double appropriately
- Plateau over time
This pattern can resemble a biochemical pregnancy in its early stages, which is why careful monitoring is essential.
